A rare gemstone that has always been highly prized, lapis lazuli (Na,Ca)8(AI.Si)12O24(S,So4) forms only where limestone comes into contact with calcite and pyrites. Metamorphic conditions produce a new mineral, Lazurite, which has an intense blue loloration. Lapis Lazuli is a rock comprising several minerals: Lazurite embedded in calcite and pryrites..
